Successful participation in LaVision’s PIV seminars

Our colleagues Eileen Trampe and Kathrina Theisen took part in two LaVision seminars in Göttingen from November 18 to 22. The seminars offered the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of the optical flow measurement technique Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV).

The DaVis PIV seminar took place from November 18 to 20 and provided a comprehensive introduction to two-dimensional and, in some cases, three-dimensional flow field measurement. After the interesting theoretical lectures on the topic, practical exercises were carried out in small groups. Sessions were held on planar PIV — this measurement technique is also used at the IOB — as well as on stereo PIV and time-resolved PIV. In the software sessions, important skills for vector calculation and data post-processing were taught, which lead to optimal PIV evaluation.

The second DaVis Tomo-PIV/STB seminar, which took place over the last two days from November 21 to 22, included two practical exercises. As part of the software sessions, participants were introduced to the data analysis of Tomo-PIV and STB images. The associated practical exercises focussed on the specific challenges of three-dimensional flow measurement technology. The 3D flow field measurement during the gliding flight of an owl was examined as part of the Object-aware Shake-the-Box (STB) investigation. The flow around a 3D-printed model of a stretched owl wing was tested in water. Fluorescent particles were used as seeding particles in the investigations. The procedure included the setting of six cameras used, the calibration of the camera system and the recording of measurement images of the moving owl model and the subsequent 3D flow field calculation in DaVis.

We would like to thank LaVision for the informative seminars and the excellent opportunity to exchange ideas with the speakers and other participants. In addition to good recommendations for individual PIV applications, the exchange about the challenges and possible applications of the measurement techniques was also very informative.

The seminar week also motivated us to carry out stereo PIV technology here at the IOB in the future.
