From 28 to 30 January, our colleagues Christian Wuppermann, Thomas Echterhof, Nico Schmitz, Felix Kaiser, Andres Ramirez Sanchez, Elsa Busson, Alex Garcia-Vergara and Johannes Losacker attended the general assembly of the EU-funded large-scale project HyInHeat — Hydrogen Technologies for Decarbonization of Industrial Heating Processes in Grenoble, France. The General Assembly offered an intensive exchange of information on the cooperation between the various project partners and innovative ideas for the project.
After arriving in Voreppe, our colleagues were given a tour of the C‑TEC development center of aluminum manufacturer Constellium. It was particularly interesting to see the demonstrator of the 12-tonne aluminium reverberatory furnace in action for the first time. By combusting hydrogen with pure oxygen, the melting furnace enables CO2-neutral production on an industrial scale. To this end, it was equipped with new burners and exhaust gas measurement technology as part of the project. Afterwards, IOB and Constellium had the opportunity to discuss future collaboration. A joint dinner rounded off the first day.
The next day began with a meeting at the World Trade Center Grenoble. After a brief introduction by the hosts, the exchange on the work packages began, with project progress being presented and discussed. After a lunch break, the attendees had the opportunity to take part in a guided tour of the C‑TEC development center. In addition to the modified melting furnace, insights were given into the development expertise from recycling to the finished product. The informative day ended in a rooftop bar in Grenoble. There, the discussions continued in a group setting.
On the second day of the General Assembly, the morning was again used to discuss the various work packages. Among other things, the design of a safe and efficient H2 and O2 infrastructure was discussed. Overall, the project partners were able to exchange information on the status and initial results, as well as problems and solution strategies. A poster session began in the afternoon, in which posters were prepared on individual sub-tasks of the work packages. Our colleagues contributed to the session with the following topics:
- Impact of H2 impurities on flow measurement
- Radiation Modeling in CFD: Discrete Ordinates and Weighted Sum of Gray Gases
- CFD Simulations for Integration of an LTOF Burner in Speira’s 1‑ton Melting Furnace.
In the remaining hours, important organizational points concerning the communication and organization of the project were discussed.
We would like to thank Constellium for their hospitality and for the interesting tour of the development center. We would also like to thank the Politecnico di Milano for supporting the event.
We look forward to the next General Assembly!
