The 50th Topic Oriented Technical Meeting (TOTeM) of the International Flame Research Foundation (IFRF) took place in Piacenza, Italy, on December 5. & 6. 2023. This was organized by the Italian committee of the IFRF and held at the campus of the Polytechnic University of Milan in Piacenza (Politecnico di Milano). The IOB was represented by Fabian Scheck and Justin Hauch.
The event offered a wide-ranging programme on the topic of decarbonizing combustion in hard-to-abate sectors. This was highlighted in 18 specialist presentations and a poster session. Among other things, the focus was on the glass industry and the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel as well as the possibilities of carbon capture and storage (CCS). Fabian Scheck presented his poster to the topic:

In addition to the professional exchange on the campus of the Polytechnic University of Milan in Piacenza, a guided tour to the Buzzi Unicem S.p.A. cement plant in Vernasca was organized. A special feature of the plant is the operation of a pilot CCS plant downstream of the calcining kiln.
