In the con­text of this Eng­lish-lan­guage cour­se, the pro­cess chains for the pro­duc­tion of steel, alu­mi­ni­um, cast pro­ducts, glass and cera­mics are ana­ly­sed against the back­ground of cur­rent ques­ti­ons on the resour­ce and ener­gy effi­ci­en­cy of metall­ur­gi­cal pro­ces­ses, among other things by means of mass and ener­gy balan­ces and CO2 emis­si­ons. The IOB holds one of the 7 lec­tu­re parts on the topic of “Hea­ting and Heat Treatment”.

As part of the cour­se ‘Gene­ral Sys­tems Engi­nee­ring’ we offer an intro­duc­tion to the basics of nume­ri­cal flow simu­la­ti­on with the fini­te volu­me method.

The modu­le tea­ches basic nume­ri­cal methods for sol­ving ordi­na­ry dif­fe­ren­ti­al equa­tions, non-line­ar and line­ar sys­tems of equa­tions and for deal­ing with initi­al, boun­da­ry value and inver­se pro­blems. The modu­le covers methods for dis­creti­sa­ti­on, sta­bi­li­ty and error ana­ly­sis as well as advan­ced tech­ni­ques such as New­ton methods, LR decom­po­si­ti­on and fini­te ele­ment methods.

The cour­se aims to teach stu­dents the methods for ana­ly­sing and eva­lua­ting sus­tainable pro­cess chains using the exam­p­le of metal pro­duc­tion and metal recy­cling pro­ces­ses. The focus is on the pre­pa­ra­ti­on of mass and ener­gy balan­ces of cou­pled pro­cess chains, the deter­mi­na­ti­on of key figu­res for ener­gy and resour­ce effi­ci­en­cy and the cal­cu­la­ti­on of the car­bon foot­print of the respec­ti­ve pro­ces­ses, taking into account MFA/LCA (Mate­ri­al Flow Analysis/Life Cycle Ana­ly­sis) solu­ti­on approaches.
