Influence of heat transfer on the process stability of continuous strip treatment plants

The aim of the research project is to achieve a better understanding of processes in continuous plants. Here, a process window is developed which sets the quality-reducing phenomena (strip warpage, strip shrinkage) in connection with the cooling rate or a local heat transfer distribution. This will be implemented by linking the results of the experimental investigations of the AiF project “Stability considerations for metallic strips under the influence of nozzle fields” and the experimental investigations of heat transfer as well as the numerical modelling of undesired strip distortions, which will be carried out in this project. Due to the trend of heat treatment of thinner strips at higher annealing temperatures and higher cooling rates, production restrictions occur. The correlation to be determined offers a better understanding of the causes of strip instability and the possibility to increase the productivity of heat treatment equipment with respect to new materials. The plant constructors have the possibility to use the research results for the improved design of the plants with regard to new material concepts, since in the research project different constructive influencing variables (nozzle system, free unguided length) are also considered. The results thus help in the design, the design and the commissioning of continuous strip treatment lines, in particular also in the case of modification measures at the cooling section. The findings of this research project on the generated process window will enable plant operators to reduce production downtimes in the plant. At the same time, it is possible to better estimate process requirements/restrictions for new material concepts.
