Development of cross-flow fans for the use in thermoprocess plants
The research objective is the development of cross-flow fans for use in thermo-processing plants for an operating temperature of up to 500 °C. Cross-flow fans are elongated fans with radial suction and radial discharge. They are not commercially available for use in thermoprocessing plants. Cross-flow fans have the advantage over industrial fan designs (centrifugal fans with forward or backward curved blades, axial fans) of providing a uniform flow over the entire discharge width. This has a positive effect on the uniformity of the temperature distribution of the material to be treated and thus on its product properties. When radial or axial fans are used, the required uniformity is achieved with pressure-loss intensive equalizing devices. These cause an increased power requirement in the operation of the plants and an increased expenditure in the design and construction of the plant. Both can be reduced by using cross-flow fans. The development of cross-flow fans for use in thermal process technology, which the applicant aims to achieve, offers plant constructors, usually SME, considerable advantages in the design and construction of heat treatment plants and plant operators, often also SME, advantages in terms of energy and resource efficiency and product quality.
