Tailored Heating in Hot Forming
The idea for the research proposal “Tailored Heating” stems from hot forging. There, a homogeneous temperature profile is aimed for or only a section of the component is heated (partial heating). In this research project, the possibilities for a tailor-made distribution of the yield stress are to be investigated. This is achieved by a targeted inhomogeneous temperature distribution. This offers an additional new possibility to control the material flow. A complex preform can be produced by free upsetting in combination with tailored heating. This has already been proven in a preliminary study.
Conductive heating, induction and heating with Direct Flame Impingement are used to generate the temperature distribution in three different materials. First, numerical investigations are carried out in order to limit the parameter space and to design the test setups. Experimental investigations will then be carried out and the three processes will be compared technically and economically. The intended results include the process window for the tailor-made distribution of yield stress for the three materials as well as guidelines for the design and application of corresponding heating systems. At the same time, an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of the different heating processes for different applications is provided.
The process offers the possibility to produce preforms without expensive specialized machines and thus allows SMEs in the forging industry to expand their product portfolio without large additional costs. In addition, there are possibilities for an optimized material flow during drop forging. In addition, SMEs that can manufacture heating equipment and simulation providers that support forging companies in the planning of forming processes also benefit.
