News from the IOB

The IOB at the MAGMAacademy

From September 4 to 5, 2025, our colleague Moritz Eickhoff took part in the “Direct Chill Casting of Aluminum” seminar at the MAGMAacademy in Aachen. The focus was on the practical application of simulation technologies in continuous casting processes.

On the first day of the seminar, the basics and practical challenges of DC casting were discussed. After the opening presentation by Erik Hepp (MAGMA GmbH), which provided an overview of principles and processes, various presentations on continuous casting processes took place. Dr. Johannes Morscheiser (NOVELIS Koblenz GmbH) contributed interesting perspectives on direct chill casting, its casting defects, and forming technologies.

The first day of the seminar ended with a joint dinner at the Elisenbrunnen restaurant, which provided an opportunity for pleasant conversation and professional exchange.

The second day of the seminar focused on forward-looking developments and simulation technologies. Dr. Evengii Shvydkii (MAGMA GmbH) presented current research on the heat treatment of aluminum and possibilities of thermomechanical coupling in simulations.

During lunch, participants had the opportunity to discuss the topics of the seminar in greater depth and network with each other.

The MAGMAacademy’s Direct Chill Casting seminar provided interesting insights into the operation and, at the same time, facilitated exchange between users of simulation technologies and interested parties. The IOB was able to develop ideas for joint project work.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to Erik Hepp for organizing and supporting the seminar and to the MAGMAacademy for the interesting presentations.
