From May 26 to 29, the IOB went on a field trip to Southern Germany. Joining us were our colleagues Andrés Ramírez Sánchez, Jan-Henrik Rieger, Matthias Sanders, Manuel Sanders, Christopher Wünning, Prof. Christian Wuppermann and Katharina Rothhöft. Our team was accompanied by 15 students from various departments.
The trip included interesting visits to several industrial companies. The program featured exciting insights into modern production processes, materials processing, and energy technology.
The trip began in Walldorf at Kanthal. During a factory tour, the “Fibrothal” and “Flow Heater” technologies were presented. The day ended with a group dinner in Offenburg.

The second day began with a company presentation at the BSW steelworks in Kehl. This was followed by a tour of the scrap yard, where steel from ships is collected and melted down in electric arc furnaces. The day concluded with a visit to the Dinkelacker brewery in Stuttgart.
On the third day, the group visited the facilities of WS Thermal Process Technology in Renningen. Following a tour of the production facility for regenerative and recuperative burners, the test facilities featuring various burners and furnaces were showcased. Reformers for ammonia production and the E‑Flox were also presented.

Before returning to Aachen, the itinerary included a final visit to Mercedes-AMG in Affalterbach. At this plant, our group gained insight into engine assembly, particularly the production lines for four- and eight-cylinder engines.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Kanthal, BSW, WS Thermal Process Technology, Mercedes-AMG, and Dinkelacker for the interesting tours of their facilities, the great impressions, and the warm welcome.
We are already looking forward to the next excursion!
