From March 22 to 24, our colleagues Elsa Busson, Nico Schmitz, Thomas Echterhof, Alex Garcia Vergara, Johannes Losacker, and Andrés Ramírez Sánchez attended the General Assembly of the HyInHeat project, “Hydrogen Technologies for Decarbonization of Industrial Heating Processes,” in Bilbao.
The first day began with a presentation of the results from WP4, which was completed last June. This was followed by a presentation on the current status of WP5, followed by a presentation of results from CTEC regarding their 12-ton chamber furnace. Additional study results were then presented by Speira and Metlen, along with demonstrations by Speira and Toyota.

After a short lunch break, there was a presentation on hydrogen demonstration tests on steel. Among other things, the event featured presentations of the demonstration results for the shuttle hearth furnace and the rotary hearth furnace by Sarralle and Tecnalia. Following a city tour of the old town, the day concluded with a group dinner.
On the second day, participants toured the ArcelorMittal facilities in Olaberria. Using a high-performance electric arc furnace and two hot rolling mills, the plant produces one million tons of steel annually. This was followed by a panel discussion in which participants exchanged experiences regarding hydrogen combustion, spanning the spectrum from research to industrial applications. The meeting concluded with a presentation of the results of WP7, which provides an ecological, economic, and technical overview, as well as a summary of WP9.
We would like to extend our sincere thanks to GHI, Befesa, and ArcelorMittal for organizing the event and for the interesting tour of the facilities.
We look forward to the next General Assembly!
