FLOXonia — Low-emission combustion of NH3 for industrial furnaces using flameless oxidation with partial cracking of the fuel
Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie (BMWE), 1 November 2024 to 31 October 2027
Project description
The aim of the joint project is to develop a heating system for industrial furnaces based on green NH3. For this purpose, the properties and special features of coupled treatment and heating systems are to be investigated. The aim is to define optimum operating ranges when using such a system with NH3 as fuel. The NOx emissions should not be higher than with today’s fossil-fuelled heating systems. The company WS Reformer GmbH (affiliated company) has developed a compact NH3 cracker with which the (partial) splitting of NH3 can be carried out in an energy-efficient manner. Heat is also recovered during the process. The compact cracker can be installed directly upstream of industrial furnaces and no additional, centralised reactor is required.
As part of the project, investigations are to be carried out into the optimum splitting ratio of NH3 to hydrogen and nitrogen when using the NH3 cracker in combination with a heating system. The aim is to achieve low emission combustion of (partially) cracked NH3 and air by utilising proven and innovative nitrogen oxide reduction techniques. Investigations are to be carried out with pure NH3, partially split and fully split NH3.
The aim is to successfully demonstrate a coupled system on an industrial scale.
Project goals
- Development of a innovative treatment and heating system for process heat generation from green NH3
- NOx emissions comparable to current fossil fuel heating systems
